Why the right person probably isn't applying to your advert
The people who would transform your business are usually already employed, performing well and not scrolling job boards. Here's what that means for how you hire.
When a vacancy goes live, the applications that arrive share one thing: they come from people who are actively looking. That group is real, and sometimes the right person is in it. But it is a small slice of the market — and in specialist industrial, manufacturing and technical roles, it is rarely where the best people are sitting.
The people who would genuinely move your business forward are usually already employed, performing well and being looked after. They are not refreshing job boards on a Sunday evening. They will, however, take a well-judged approach about the right opportunity — especially when it comes from someone who understands their market and can talk credibly about the role.
This is the difference between advertising a job and searching for a person. Advertising waits. Search goes looking: mapping the market, identifying who is doing the role well elsewhere, and approaching them directly and discreetly. It is slower to start and far faster to finish, because the shortlist is built from the whole market rather than from whoever happened to apply.
There is a second, quieter problem with relying on adverts alone: the advert itself. A job description written as a list of demands filters out exactly the people you want. Strong candidates with options read an advert as a signal of what the company will be like to work for. If it reads like a compliance document, they scroll past — if they ever see it at all.
None of this means adverts are useless. They have their place, particularly for high-volume or entry-level hiring. But for the roles that matter most — the senior, specialist and leadership appointments where a wrong hire costs months — the right person probably isn't applying. Someone has to go and find them.
That is the work we do at Hire Quality Talent: proactive headhunting, market mapping and direct approach, across the UK, Europe and international markets. We find people. We don't wait for people to find us.
